Tirana during 1920-1938

During the first two decades as the capital, Tirana saw a rapid urban and social development. Under the influence of Italian architects and politicians, began the modernization of infrastructure and a series of streets, squares and buildings were built that have now become iconic to the capital. Moreover, political parties started to arise and pluralistic debate on ideas began. The first state institutions were also set up and the foundations of the market economy were laid. Tirana was a business city, the residence of young professionals and Italian entrepreneurs. Cafes, restaurants and cinemas were opened and cultural life began to be vibrant, in a city that is rushing to keep the pace of many other European capitals.
