Tirana during transition
The fall of the Berlin Wall, the events in Eastern Europe and the deepening of the overall crisis led to the collapse of the communist regime. But, creating democratic institutions required time and during the first years of transition the country faced great difficulties in achieving social, political and economic stability. Informality occupied many aspects of life and left his mark as well. Tirana’s population grew at rapid rates and uncontrolled construction invaded public spaces. However, around 2000, Tirana managed to find the much-needed stability, economic development thrived and the city started to shine again.
