Tirana and its surroundings during World War I

Having declared independence only 2 years ago, Albania was unprepared to defend itself against foreign powers that rushed to annex the territories of the country. However, Albanians soon organized and patriotic movements were being created everywhere, even in the then small city of Tirana.

These movements included both the population of the city and the villages of Tirana, patriots, teachers, intellectuals, young professionals, military officers, journalists and progressive clerics. Even cultural and sports societies, such as “Ditunia”, “National League”, “Agimi”, “Bashkimi” joined the movement thus increasingly factorizing Tirana as a city that wanted to play an important role in Albania’s history.
